Taking A Break

A few weeks ago, Hannah and I had a heart to heart conversation with the other elders of our church. We shared with them feelings of being burnt out and weariness.

Their response: we needed to take a break.

In July of 2010, my little family and I set out from Pittsburgh, PA to Louisville, KY to start Destiny Church. We had no clue what we were doing. However, we knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that God had called us to Louisville and so we obeyed.

Since that time, Destiny Church was birthed and has been a central part of our lives. In the mean time, we’ve also added two little ones to our family via adoption. Between those two dynamics (starting a church and welcoming two babies into our family) we’re incredibly tired.

While we have had times of “vacation” during the last 4 years, those times away were still filled with doing work from afar, as well as handling things for the church. So there wasn’t much rest.

I should be clear: the church isn’t a burden. We love our church and the people that are a part of it. We’ve gladly given of ourselves, but in doing so, we’re now zapped.

While it goes without saying, though often we need to be reminded, rest was part of God’s plan from the beginning of time (you know, the whole “He rested on the 7th day” thing). Rest is important.

So we are taking a break. We are taking a month off from all ministry.

Along with that, I had intended to stay off all news media and social media through January. However, I’m going to extend that break through the middle of February. These last few weeks of not being inundated with media has left my mind clear and light. And I like the feeling.

For those of you that are reading this and are a part of Destiny Church, know we love you. We aren’t going anywhere. We just need to rest. Should you need anything, the other leaders of the church are ready and willing (as they are always) to help you.

And for everyone, know when to take a break. We’ve seen others break under lack of rest… and it ain’t pretty. There’s a reason for sabbath. God clearly knew what He was doing… 😉

P.S. We’re able to take this break because of the incredible team of leaders that God has given our church. I preached on Biblical Leadership just this past weekend. If you’re part of Destiny and missed the service, I’d encourage you to take a listen! Check it out here.
